Shoppers pay in USDC from supported wallets, and merchants are paid out in their local currency by default, so they can accept stablecoin payments without holding crypto. ## What has changed since publishing Updated Sep 26, 2026 At launch Shopify said USDC on Base would expand to all merchants using Shopify Payments later in 2025, in 34 countries at first, with payouts in local currency and no foreign exchange fees. Check Shopify's changelog for current availability in your country before planning around it. Stablecoins also now have a US legal framework: the GENIUS Act became law on 18 July 2025 and sets federal rules for payment stablecoin issuers. The lines between traditional e-commerce and blockchain-based finance are blurring faster than ever. In a landmark announcement, global e-commerce platform **Shopify** has rolled out early access to **stablecoin payments** using **USDC** (USD Coin) on **Coinbase’s Base Layer-2 (L2) network**. This isn’t just a niche upgrade, it’s a defining moment for the future of **borderless, instant, and programmable payments**. With over a million merchants and millions of daily shoppers, Shopify is placing a huge bet on the idea that **crypto-native payments**, especially **stablecoins on L2 chains**, are the natural next step for online commerce. At **Avinya Labs**, we see this as a pivotal shift that will drive broader crypto adoption, disrupt legacy payment systems, and open new opportunities for builders, merchants, and users alike. ## Why Shopify’s Move Is a Big Deal Shopify isn’t new to crypto. Back in 2013, it [enabled Bitcoin payments through BitPay](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2013/11/09/shopify-officially-integrates-bitcoin-as-a-payment-option-for-its-70000-merchants) for its 70,000 merchants at the time. Since then, it has integrated various crypto options using partners like BitPay, Solana Pay, and CoinPayments. But this time is different. Rather than depending on external gateways, Shopify is integrating **USDC directly into Shopify Payments**, its native checkout system, via **Coinbase’s Base**. This unlocks: **Instant, 24/7 transactions** **Near-zero fees on a high-speed Layer-2 network** **1% cashback rewards** ([announced](https://cointelegraph.com/news/shopify-early-access-usdc-stablecoin-payments-base) for US customers paying with USDC) in local currency for customers who pay with USDC Shopify CEO **Tobi Lütke** summed it up best: > “We think that stablecoins are a natural way to transact on the Internet.” Source: [Tobi Lütke on X, June 2025](https://x.com/tobi/status/1933236205027799254) He’s not wrong. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies, stablecoins like **USDC** are pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, offering stability while keeping the **decentralized, open-access nature of blockchain intact**. ## What Is Coinbase’s Base, and Why Use It? **Base** is an Ethereum Layer-2 chain developed by Coinbase. It’s fast, secure, and built to reduce the cost and complexity of using decentralized apps. At the time of writing (June 2025), Base held over **6% of USDC’s then $61B supply**, making it the **fourth-largest chain for USDC**. [Circle's USDC transparency page](https://www.circle.com/transparency) has the current figures. Why is Base ideal for this? **Scalability**: Low congestion, high throughput **Affordability**: Significantly reduced gas fees **Trust**: Backed by Coinbase’s security and compliance frameworks **Ecosystem integration**: Seamlessly plugs into Ethereum and other chains via bridges For Shopify, choosing Base means offering users a **Web2-smooth experience** on **Web3-native rails**. ## Borderless Commerce: The True Potential of Stablecoins Traditionally, online transactions are bound by layers of intermediaries, banks, payment processors, and currency conversion tools, all charging fees and introducing delays. With **stablecoins on Layer-2**, you get: **Real-time settlement, globally** **Minimal transaction costs** **No chargebacks** **Programmable incentives** (like cashback, loyalty rewards, or cross-border financing) It’s more than just payments. It’s the beginning of **financial infrastructure that works for a global, digital-native population**, and it’s finally entering the mainstream. Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network built by Coinbase, designed for low-cost, fast transactions while settling security back to Ethereum, making it practical infrastructure for consumer-facing payment use cases. ### Why is Shopify supporting USDC payments? Stablecoin payments let merchants settle transactions faster and with lower fees than traditional card networks, particularly for cross-border sales, while USDC's dollar-pegged value avoids the volatility of other cryptocurrencies. ### What are the benefits of stablecoin payments for merchants? Lower processing fees, faster settlement (often near-instant versus multi-day card settlement), and easier access to global customers without traditional cross-border payment friction. ### How can a business start accepting USDC payments?
